This month’s Who’s Who is Allison Gunn the brand new manager at the Highlander.
The Highlander is famous as one of Paris’s favourite hangouts for expats, off-duty bar staff, night owls, and visiting tourists. They show all sports live on giant screens upstairs & downstairs, have a great Pub Quiz on Sunday nights, possibly Paris’s most popular Open Mic night on Wednesdays and a Happy Hour Mon-Fri 5-8pm.
- Funky Paris: What made you first to come to Paris?
- Allison: I took a year out to learn French and fell in love with the place. Ten years later I can’t see myself ever leaving.
- Funky Paris: What’s it like working in the Highlander?
- Allison: It’s like a home from home. I’ve worked here on and off since the pub opened and now I’m really excited to be back as the manager. The staff are crazy and love to party all night long...
- Funky Paris: What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever seen in Paris?
- Allison: Robotic Johnny Halliday fans “dancing” at his free concert on the Champs des Mars.
- Funky Paris: What music would you play to get the bar rocking?
- Allison: Pump it by the Black Eyed Peas or anything by Missy Elliot.
- Funky Paris: What are your favourie moments in The Highlander?
- Allison: Wow that’s difficult, there’s so many, but some that spring to mind are when Scotland are playing in Paris and the tartan army descends, or Scottish legends Simple Minds popping in for a beer.
- Funky Paris: What do you do when you’re not working?
- Allison: I love eating out. My favourite eateries in Paris are, The Brasserie Ile St Louis (Ile St Louis) , The Grange (Maubert Mutiualite), and Le Petit Suisse (facing Luxembourg). Although I’ve known to crave a kebab after a night out.
- Funky Paris: What other bars do you like hanging out?
- Allison: The Rhubarb is always fun and they have the best dirty Martini’s in Paris, and of course the Thistle because they have the tallest barstaff in Paris (and size is everything).
- Funky Paris: What are your ambitions?
- Allison: Other than making the Highlander the friendliest and funniest bar in Paris I’d love to one day have a beach house on the west coast of France.
- Funky Paris: What’s your tipple?
- Allison: I love any Scottish Whisky and especially Strathislas.
